powerful series depicting the plight of activists fighting to preserve their communities from mining and agribusiness has led to Uruguayan photographer Pablo Albarenga being named Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photography Awards 2020.
Spills, Sins & Starbucks: how we designed our cities around oil
The Gulf Coast Oil Spill is the worst environmental disaster in history. This talk explores the tragedy of the spill, and how our own dependence on fossil fuels is really to blame and a plan for how to transform our cities and suburbs to eliminate this addiction for good.
The design of our cities and suburbs is dictated by the automobile. From the width of the street, location of driveways, distance between buildings and the spacing of the structure, the automobile has irrevocably changed our cities from human scale to vehicle scale. This talk explores those connections.
Through the lens of the 7 Deadly Sins, this lecture examines the root causes leading up to the oil spill, the forces driving these events and the maps out several poignant and humorous alternatives we need to develop. If the Car Culture represents the 20th Century, then we need to redefine our culture for the 21st.
This brand new "bullet-point free" talk is presented by the acclaimed author of "Green Building for Dummies." It was hailed by Apartment Therapy as "phenomenal" and "engaging, funny and super interesting."
The World Photography Organization has made public the overall winners list of the prestigious 2021 Sony World Photography Awards. Distinguished documentary photographer Craig Easton (UK) was awarded the title of Photographer of the Year for his series titled Bank Top, and was awarded a cash prize of $ 25 as well as an equipment kit consisting of Sony's digital imaging products.
The marmot looks paralyzed by fear, its fingers splayed and mouth agape. The fox is poised to pounce. It’s a freeze-frame of chaos, impulse, and terror—nature at its essence.
For his remarkable memorialization of the moment before attack, Chinese photographer Yongqing Bao has won Wildlife Photographer of the Year, awarded today by London’s Natural History Museum.

How many climate migrants will there be?
By Hannah BarnesBBC News
· 2 September 2013
If politicians are to be believed, migration caused by climate change will cause the world huge problems. One of the latest to repeat the warning is UK shadow immigration minister Chris Bryant, who, like many others before him, said 200 million people may be forced to flee their country. But how reliable is this figure?
In
a speech to the Institute for Public Policy Research
, Chris Bryant warned that millions of people around the world could be forced to leave their homes over the next few decades and move to countries less affected by environmental problems.
"If we get climate change wrong there is a very real danger we shall see levels of mass migration as yet unparalleled," he said.
"The United Nations (UN) estimates that in 2008 20 million people were displaced by climate change."
In the longer term, he said, "you can imagine that the UN estimates of 200 million such refugees, more than the total number of worldwide migrants today, may be about right".
We cannot comment in any way on the accuracy of a figure we did not produceUN spokesperson
The MP told the BBC it would be inaccurate to say he "warned that climate change will create 200 million migrants". He added, however: "It would be accurate to say that I argued that we have to tackle the push factors that affect migration such as climate change as otherwise the numbers who are made environmental refugees may reach the estimate of 200 million."
But how were these estimates calculated, and is the future really that bleak?
Let's take the 20 million first.
Alex Randall may seem on paper the kind of person who would agree with figures like this - he works for the Climate Outreach and Information Network, a charity which aims to raise awareness of climate refugees and their needs.
In fact he is critical. The 20 million figure, he suggests, is reached by "adding up all of the people who've been displaced by any kind of natural disaster and labelling them climate refugees." And that, in his view, is problematic.

"It's certainly true that climate change might be making some of those particular disasters more likely. But it's certainly not the case that we can attribute all of those individual displacements to climate change alone," Randall says.

powerful series depicting the plight of activists fighting to preserve their communities from mining and
agribusiness has led to Uruguayan photographer Pablo Albarenga being named Photographer of the
Year at the Sony World Photography Awards 2020.
Albarenga won the award for his series "Seeds of Resistance" and will take home the $25,000 prize, according to
a press release from the World Photography Organisation published Tuesday.
The series pairs photographs of landscapes at risk with portraits of the activists fighting to save the territories.

"With this important award, I see two victories: first, the opportunity to tell the stories of the traditional
communities of the Amazon by highlighting the people who are still fighting not only for their future, but for
everyone's," said Albarenga in a statement.
"Secondly, that the photographer of the year award has landed in Latin America, a continent historically told
through the eyes of foreigners."
Mike Trow, chair of the 2020 professional competition, said the series "is a brilliant set of images which offers a
powerful visual record of how deforestation goes hand in hand with the destruction of communities and peoples."
