Welcome from the Dean, Learning and Teaching
I am pleased to welcome you to the first edition of PostgradPerspectives for
Semester 2, 2007.
To those students returning to continue their studies this semester, I hope you
all had a restful winter break and are ready for the challenges that lay ahead.
To our commencing students, I take the opportunity to again welcome you to
the School and wish you well in your studies. We are pleased that you have
chosen the Griffith Business School as your study destination, and look forward
to helping you to achieve your personal and professional goals.
I hope you have all settled into your studies, and I look forward to engaging with you throughout the

News from the School
Global Ranking of Accounting Research
I am pleased to report that in the latest issue of the Accounting and Finance (Vol 47, No 2, 2007,
“Global Ranking of Accounting Programmes and the Elite Effect in Accounting Research”), Griffith
University ranks at number 72 in the world for accounting research (Table 3, p. 199), and as one of the
top 10 upward movers for the period 1998 - 2005, compared to the preceding seven years (Appendix
II, Panel B on page 220). This places Griffith's accounting at rank seven in Australia, just behind
Macquarie, and ahead of UWA, ANU, and Adelaide.
This is a wonderful outcome, and I am sure you will join me in congratulating the Department’s
researchers on this significant achievement.
Our people
We recently congratulated Emeritus Professor Colin Mackerras AO (from the Department of
International Business and Asian Studies) on having been made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO)
in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
I’m sure those of you who have been fortunate enough to have been taught by Colin, or who are
familiar with his work will agree that it is wonderful to see Colin's distinguished contribution to
teaching, learning and research being acknowledged in this way. We are indeed privileged to have such
a dedicated and distinguished scholar as a member of the School.

Griffith Innovation Challenge 2007
Since 2005 the Griffith Innovation Challenge business planning competition has engaged students from
all across the University and from every discipline area. Originally run as a voluntary activity by both
academics and administrative staff, the Challenge is now to take this very valuable 'real world' learning
activity to a more permanent and formal place within the University.
Following a request from the Vice Chancellor, the Griffith Business School has agreed to host and
organise the Griffith Innovation Challenge in future years. However, it remains a University-wide
student innovation competition as in the past. The focus remains on students (from all parts of the
University) developing business cases for commercialising innovations, starting up businesses, and
taking ideas from the conceptual to the actual - with an acknowledgment of the implications this can
bring.
The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition to the learning and
networking possibilities, there are $40,000 in cash and prizes to be won.

Student news and achievements
Master of International Business graduate selected as one of ‘100 outstanding young people'
Congratulations to International Business student, Maxime Kerault, who was recently selected as one
of the 100 outstanding young people from the Asia Pacific region to attend the 2007 Asia Pacific
Cities Summit as a youth delegate. The MIB graduate is being provided with complimentary registration
to the Asia Pacific Cities Summit, and will have the opportunity to mix with business leaders from
around the world.
The Summit is an initiative of Brisbane City Council and has been held biennially since 1999 – the host
city rotating between Brisbane and bidding cities in the Asia Pacific region. This is however, the first
time the Summit has featured a separate youth forum focusing on future leaders (of Brisbane and the
Southeast Queensland corner).
Maxime's success in being selected as a Youth Delegate was partially contributed to by his recent
semester spent as an intern (as part of his Griffith program) with the Australian Trade Commission in
Brisbane.
