Portugal's prime minister from 1750 to 1777 was the Marquis de Pombal. He rebuilt the city of Lisbon after a devastating earthquake and reformed Portugal's government and economy. Pombal centralized authority and administration, imposed control over the clergy and nobility, and reduced the power of the Jesuits and religious orders.
