3. Places traveled
I love traveling!
After living in the states for four years, I have
been to 40 states, and my goal is to travel
through all 50 states before I graduate!
5. How can travelers enjoy playing chess while
constantly moving around while traveling?
Design a portable chess set that allows
players to “Pause and Play”-- this means
that players can “pause” the game at
anytime without moving the chess
pieces away from the chessboard; then
continue playing afterwards.
Objective
8. Concept Ideation
After research, a good amount of ideation was done.
The ideas are based on the most efficient way of hold-
ing the chess pieces in position; the materials used to
make the chess set look asethetically-pleasing; and the
easiest manufacturing process without using magnets.
9. Copper
Plastic Sheet
Silver
Cover
Chess piece (Copper)
Chess piece (Silver)
Chessboards
Sustainable Material: bamboo
Easy manufacturing process
Lower manufacturing cost compared to magnetic set
12. 1. Open the chess set 2. Take the cover off
4. Put the chessboards
onto the cover
5. Make the chess pieces
stand up to play
3. Flip the cover over and
put it underneath boards
When playing...
13. When pausing...
1. Lay the chess pieces flat 2. Take the chessboards
out from under the cover
3. Flip the cover over
4. Put the cover on5. Close the chess set
21. Meet Virginia Zhu!
What is paronychia?
It is really difficult for me
to cut my nails when hav-
ing paronychia....
Paronychia is a common skin infection around finger and toe
nails caused from biting, picking, impromper trimming, or
pushing back of the cuticle.
The user’s shear
Virginia has paronychia
since she was a child, and she
has a special shear that cuts her
hidden toenails. However, the
shear is not comfortable and is
difficult to use, and she hopes to
have a better shear to use.
22. Task Analysis
The blades are too short and not
curved enough to cut the hidden
nails
The handles are not ergonomic The shear cannot be used to
trim
23. Concept Ideation
Add longer curved
blades
Improve ergonomics
for the handles
Design the shear to
trim the nails
24. Process
1 1/2”
2 1/2”
Even more developed
After testing four mockups with foam core, I found that the
most comfortable grip when the blades are closed is between
1 - 1 1/2”, whereas when the blades are open, the most
comfortable gap is between 2- 2 1/2”.
