Figs have been cultivated for over 11,000 years, with archaeological evidence placing their domestication in West Asia around 11,000 BC. They were an early domesticated crop and spread throughout the Mediterranean by 5000 BC. Figs were introduced worldwide by traders, missionaries, and colonists over the centuries. In the US, they arrived in California in 1769 when Spanish missions were established. Commercial fig production began in the late 19th century in California and various varieties have been cultivated and bred since then.
