This document contains a phonics assessment for students in Year 2. It includes 6 sets of graphemes and phonemes to assess. For each item, the assessor should show a flashcard, check if the student can say the phoneme, then have the student write the grapheme and check if it is correct. The assessment should stop if the student finds it too difficult. Younger students are expected to get few correct initially, while older students should get most correct by the end of the year.

Show each flash card. If the child can say the correct phoneme – tick the first box.
- Hide the flashcards. Say each phoneme and ask the child to write the grapheme on a whiteboard or piece
of paper. If they write it correctly – tick the second box.
– If at any time the child seems to find it too difficult – stop the assessment at that point!
– First time – expect children to get very few ticks ( if any ) from set 6 onwards.
– At the end of year – expect children to get almost all ticks.
