Heredity, environment, media, attitude, and behavior all influence our development in different ways. Heredity determines genetic traits passed down from parents. Environment includes surroundings like home, work, city/rural living that shape health and lifestyle. Media such as TV, music, and internet expose us to ideas impacting behaviors. Attitude, which is somewhat controllable, heavily affects mood and outlook. Behavior, the most controllable determinant, includes daily actions directly impacting health and relationships through habits like eating, drinking, and smoking.
Heredity, environment, media, culture, attitude, and behavior all influence human development in various ways. Heredity determines genetic traits passed from parents to offspring. Environment includes surroundings like home, work, city/rural living that impact health. Media such as TV, internet and music shape views and behaviors. Culture dictates beliefs, traditions and customs that are learned. Attitude or mindset affects mood and outlook. Behavior encompasses actions under personal control that impact health and relationships.
This document discusses several student groups' projects on determinants of health. It includes overviews and research on heredity, environment, media, culture, technology, attitude, and behavior. Some of the key points made are:
- Heredity is out of a person's control and can influence traits passed down from parents like addiction risks. Studies link genes to obesity and mental illness risks.
- The environment can impact health through factors like air pollution, social environments, crime, and parental behaviors like smoking.
- Media influences people's body image and some research shows it contributes to unhealthy weight loss behaviors and dieting among teenage girls and children replacing activities with TV watching.

This document discusses several student groups' class projects on determinants of health. Each group focuses on a different determinant: heredity, environment, media, culture, technology, attitude, and behavior. For each determinant, the groups provide definitions, ratings of how much control an individual has, and examples of research on the determinant's influence along with cited statistics. The examples discuss topics like genetics and obesity, pollution's effects, media influence on body image, and relationships between attitudes, behaviors, and health outcomes.
Heredity is passed down from parents to offspring through genes and can influence traits and health conditions. Some examples provided include genes linked to obesity and mental illness. Environment can also impact health, such as air pollution leading to deaths. Media influences behaviors through promoting certain body images and celebrities. Culture shapes views of issues like obesity and economic status affects health. Technology impacts sleep, obesity, and cyberbullying. Positive attitudes are linked to better health outcomes while behaviors such as smoking, drinking and driving, and anorexia carry health risks.
Heredity is the complete set of inherited characteristics of an organism. It has no control rating because traits are determined before birth. Research shows heredity can influence predispositions to mental health issues and cancer risk. Environment is the surrounding conditions where one lives and operates. It has moderate control potential. Research links environments like lead exposure, peer influence, and family life to physical and mental health. Culture provides identity and support but can also limit independence. It has some control. Research ties culture to help-seeking, behavioral influence from diverse heritages, and conforming to peer norms.

• Definition: the transmission of genetic
characters from parents to offspring: it is
dependent upon the segregation and
recombination of genes
• Rating of Control:0
• Selling Point: Its more influential because we
have no control in what we inherit.

3. Research of Influence of Determinant
Example: Diseases
• Stat: Heredity influences the type of Diseases you are

Example: Mental Illness
Stat: If a parent has bipolar disorder offspring might

5. Overview of Environment
• Definition: The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or
plant lives or operates.
• Rating of Control: 1.5: You can somewhat control the cleanliness of your
home, but especially as a teen, you cannot change where you live and the
climate/other conditions there. You have a lot more control over your
social life, but looking at the big picture, you can really only interact with
the people in your environment, of whom you cannot explicitly 'choose.'
• Selling Point: Your peers and family have the heaviest influence on your
personality as you grow and likewise your decision making. 'Friends' who
are drawn to drug use or dangerous sports/'adventures' will press their
ideas of fun on each other. Association with athletic or studious
individuals nearly always makes for a healthier lifestyle. Regarding
location, living in cities or other polluted areas can be detrimental to your
physical health, while living in areas of high elevation or near the sea can
strengthen/cleanse your lungs and sinuses, etc.
6. Research of Influence of Environment
Example: Stress at work
• Stat: The 2002 Aventis Healthcare Survey in Canada finds fifty-one percent of
employees experiencing much stress at work, with twenty-five percent of
them falling physically ill due to workplace stress.

Example:
Stat: People that live in a city live longer that people who live in a rural
area. Mortality rates in a metro area are substantially smaller and are
decreasing at a higher rate when compared to a non-metro area.

• Stat: Inadequate, unhealthy, crowded, or too-costly housing can pose serious
problems for children's physical, psychological, and material well-being. In
2009, 45 percent of U.S. households with children had physically inadequate
housing, crowded housing, and/or a housing cost burden of more than 30
percent of household income.

11. Overview of Attitude
• Definition: A manner, disposition, feeling, etc., with regard to a person or
thing; tendency or orientation, especially with the mind.
• Rating of Control: 7-8, because we can try to control our attitude by
thinking positive, but bad days are inevitable and natural. No one can
maintain a healthy attitude all the time.
• Selling Point: Attitude is more influential than other determinants
because it has a heavy influence on your mood. If you have a negative
attitude, even good things can be twisted to be upsetting. A negative
attitude emphasizes the bad things and results in much more stress. A
positive person who looks for the best in everything can look past the bad
stuff and tends to be much more relaxed, happy, and social as a result.
12. Research of Influence of Determinant

behavior is the most influential determinant
because there is total cognitive control
