Aert van der Neer was a Dutch Golden Age landscape painter who lived from 1603 to 1677. He is best known for his moonlit landscapes featuring figures skating on frozen canals or rivers. Van der Neer brought a new level of naturalism and atmospheric effects to Dutch landscape painting through his use of light and shadow.
