At AARP Foundation Experience Corps, our mission is to engage highly trained adults
50 and over to help children attain literacy proficiency by the end of 3rd grade, so that
children succeed and older adults thrive. During the school year, in 22 communities across
the country, Experience Corps volunteer tutors spend time in kindergarten through
third-grade classrooms working with struggling students to improve their reading ability.
But we know a well-trained tutor is no substitute for a family member who reads with their
children and reviews homework with them.
That’s one of the reasons why we collaborated with PBS KIDS on this fun WordGirl activity
book to be used over the summer months—to provide great opportunities for families to
watch educational television and work on fun projects together.
All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational
activities during the summer. But more than half of the achievement gap can be explained
by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.
The WordGirl activities are designed to help your child maintain and grow their vocabulary
during the summer months preparing them for academic success in the coming school year.
We hope you enjoy working through some of these WordGirl exercises with the children
in your lives.
Experience Corps is a program of AARP Foundation. AARP Foundation is the charitable affiliate of AARP and works in
communities across the nation to help give a voice and a hand up to struggling older adults. Our work focuses on
improving food security, social connectedness, housing and income for struggling older adults. We know that by
meeting the needs of the whole person, you not only help them but can strengthen families and communities.
