Susan Toney was born in 1826 in a refugee camp in the Choctaw Nation and is full-blooded Cherokee. Her father was William Fields and her mother was Sallie Gist Fields. After the Civil War, her parents returned to their home on Dutch Creek in the Cherokee Nation. She remembers her grandfather Teasy Gist being buried in 1869 in an old Cherokee burial ground near their home. The burial ground had many early Cherokees buried there and was in use until about 50 years ago.
