This document provides layout instructions for various newspaper sections of The Waterbury Republican-American, including daily procedures, section-specific instructions, and tips for using the layout software. Key details include:

3. Important ALS info
Drag new data from Vaxads to appropriate data folder.
Open appropriate ALS 2.7.7 template (see space estimate form) to layout a new issue.
Split RUNSHEET – Go to File / Split Runsheet
Select data to split by date.
Window should read: Import Map – WRA Daily Order
Place split ads on runsheet by category: “Apple” “I” to import, then Double Click on each category
as needed.
IMPORTANT!! – The Base edition and Zone editions must be designated “Any Zone Allowed” or the ads will not split
correctly. This is achieved by double-clicking the “puzzle” icon on the zone palette and clicking the “All Off” on the
window that comes up.
IMPORT ADS – Go to File / Import (“Apple” “ I”)
Select data by date. Window should read: Import Map – WRA Daily Order – Import Layer “0”
Click “A” on toolbar to disperse ads.
Once ads have been placed on pgs, check for unplaced ads and Close RUNSHEET!
ZOOM IN z click mouse; ZOOM OUT x click mouse.
To move ads from one page to another – Select ads, hold shift key, then drag or select ads and use “Special Tool” on
toolbar to move without changing layout. Works right pg to right pg, or left pg to left pg only.
Create New Issue – Go to File / New (Issue Setup dialogue box comes up)
Broadsheet: Standard 13”x21.5”, 0 Margins, 6 Col, Gutter .125
Tab: Tabloid 10.8125”x13.125”, 0 Margins, 5 Col, Gutter .125
Create New Template – Go to template folder. Choose template closest to what is needed, rename it, then
change cells as needed.
To Apply Template – Go to Tools / Templates / Apply
REMEMBER!! – Click right side first, then left side! Apply Template to each edition, even if there will not be 3 editions
on zoned edition!!
To Change Name of Edition – Double-click on “Edition” in Edition palette.
To Export DAT file – Go to File / Export / Tab Delimited / Export Maps, Click LFs box

To Calculate RETAIL Column Inches – Subtract the “total number of ZONE column inches” from the Retail
total on the Business manifest. Write this figure in the retail space on the space estimate form. Above this
figure write in the “total column inches” of the largest zone. (Litchfield 99.9% of the time!)
DO NOT INCLUDE headers for house space reservations or house space reservations.
Check for SPECIAL SECTIONS.
Check the UNCLASS & SSB1 ads. They may or may not be included individually in layout.
Check to see that “ALL ZONE” ads are labeled ‘All Zones’ on runsheet.

To figure classified lineage estimate: Subtract the total inches including header (RE Homes) from the total
inches including header (Daily). Divide the result by 21.5 to get # of columns. Divide by 9 to get estimated
# of pgs. When figuring classified space, plan for 2 pgs more than the classified estimate indicates to
allow for runover.
