HOUSTON Waste Manage-
ment Security Services, Inc.,
(WMSSI) is partnering with
the manufacturer of a GPS
tracking device to enhance the
security of fleet vehicles used
by Fortune 500 transportation
companies.
Minneapolis-based SafeKey
Corporation manufactures a
vehicle security device installed
under a vehicle’s dash that
combines a Global Positioning
System (GPS) unit for track-
ing vehicle location with an
immobilizer that can prevent
WM Security Services gains new GPS monitoring client
the vehicle from starting.
Under a three-year contract
signed this month, WMSSI will
provide monitoring services to
track GPS signals from SafeKey
devices, receive real-time
emergency alerts and dispatch
law enforcement if needed.
“Our work will support driver
safety and loss prevention,”
said David Lee, manager of the
WMSSI Security Operations
Center. “Let’s say a driver is
accosted or a truck is stolen at
a rest stop. The driver can acti-
vate the SafeKey device, which
triggers an alert on our moni-
toring screens. We can then
dispatch local authorities to the
exact location to deal with the
situation on the ground.”
The first SafeKey client WMSSI
will support is a Texas-based
company that maintains one of
the largest private fleets in the
U.S. for delivering food, alcohol
and tobacco products. WMSSI
will monitor 200 trucks initially
with the potential for growth
to up to 2,000 vehicles in
2015, said Lee.
The SafeKey agreement marks
WMSSI’s second venture into
GPS monitoring. It has pro-
vided GPS monitoring for lone
worker safety devices from
Blackline GPS in Calgary, Alber-
ta, since 2011. Lee described
GPS monitoring as a valuable
revenue generator that could
become a significant part of
WMSSI’s future.
“Our goal is to become the na-
tional monitoring center for all
GPS manufacturers,” he said.
WMSSI provides remote-
monitoring capability for facility
access-control systems, alarm
and video monitoring, as well
as mobile-monitoring solutions
that enable customers to ob-
serve activity via the Internet.
