Zimbabwe's longtime ruler Robert Mugabe has refused to resign despite intense pressure after an apparent military coup. Mugabe had ruled Zimbabwe since 1980 but his advanced age and policies damaging the economy led the military to confine him to his home. The military said it aims for a peaceful transition of power but many hope Mugabe will finally step down to allow political reforms after decades of authoritarian rule.
