Grading System 2 nd  graders receive letter grades in Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Conduct/Citizenship based on their average. 90 – 100 = A  80 – 89  = B  (above average) 70 – 79  =  C  (average) 60 – 69  = D  (below average) 0 – 59  = F Other subjects such as Music, Art, PE, Social Studies, and Health will be given S (satisfactory progress) or N (needs improvement) Homework is a completion grade only New report card format this year
Reading expectations Read for 20 minutes each night Log each book read in the back of agenda Minimum of  10 books  or chapters each week  (both in class & at home) to reach goal of a million words
Curriculum Reading strategies that will be taught-  Predict/infer  -- Questioning  -- Summarize Evaluate  -- Monitor/clarify Spelling Vocabulary Phonics Language conventions Writing genres Narrative  -- Functional/Procedural Report  -- Response to Literature Persuasive
Curriculum  continued Math 2 digit addition/subtraction (with regrouping) Story problems  -- Time (to half & quarter hours) -- Measurement (with standard & non-standard units) -- Money (including making change)  Science Matter  -- Energy  -- Forces/motion  -- Weather Plant & animal life cycles  -- Habitats  Health, Social Studies Physical Education State requirements are 150 minutes of structured physical education (= 30 minutes daily) Please have your child dress for activity daily (including shoes he/she can run and jump in)
Curriculum  continued Technology Destination Success---- aligned with our curriculum and used for enrichment and review Students can also access at home Learn basic Microsoft Word skills Research for report writing Math drill & practice
Our schedule A rotating resource schedule ensures your child will have Music, PE with coach, Media and Art or computers once every five days Lunch is 10:40 – 11:10 am Afternoon snack--- please send in a small snack for your child ** It would be helpful if anyone could send in bulk quantities of crackers, etc. to share when a child forgets Morning work starts promptly at 8:30am ---
Field Trips Some of those possibly planned for this year include: MOSH  -- Jacksonville Zoo Ft. Clinch  -- Sally’s Robots Bus cost will be approximately $3 per student & many trips will not have an admission fee Volunteer forms must be on file for you or relatives (grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts, uncles) to chaperone and supervise small groups of students Money and permission slips will need to be turned in by the specified dates for each trip… Please do not wait until the day of the trip to notify us that you are attending
Teacher wish list There are many items that would be greatly appreciated as donations to our class. Having these items would help ease the pain of budget cuts and make instruction easier. Please take a sticky note from the board and help out however and whenever you can.
