Drame dominates court against St. Peter’s
By: Olivia O’Farrill
HAMDEN - Drame is his name, scoring baskets is his game.
Quinnipiac junior forward Ousame Drame lit up the court from within the blue as he led
the Bobcats to victory Sunday night.
His ability to be aggressive both defensively and offensively helped Quinnipiac (17-8,12-
4) defeat Saint Peter’s University, 74-64. It was in front of family and friends on Senior
Day that Quinnipiac defeated Saint Peter’s for the first time since their first meeting in
1956.
Drame proved his dominance in the first half of the game as he made six out of the ten
field goals he attempted. In the first half alone, he was making 60 percent of the shots
that he attempted and had five rebounds. With a career-high 23 points and 12
rebounds, the 6’9” forward collected his 10th double-double of the season.
The Bobcats were off to a slow start as the Peacocks picked up momentum early in the
game. Saint Peter’s opened up the game with a 12-1 run after a jumper from Marvin
Dominique five minutes into the first half.
“I got bothered with the 12 being up there. Their [Saint Peter’s] scoring was flowing a
little too quickly for a team that is a defensive team,” said Quinnipiac’s head coach, Tom
Moore. “I was just upset with our defense.”
The next minute, Drame answered back with two back-to-back layups, which started the
Bobcats off on a 16-4 run. Quinnipiac held the lead, 31-27, until the end of the first half.
The Bobcats’ high energy continued into the second half as they gained a 12-point lead
after senior forward Ike Azotam made a layup at the 12:48 mark. With five minutes left
on the clock, Quinnipiac begins to lose control of the ball as they give away two
turnovers within a minute span. Saint Peter used a full court press to bring the score
down to a difference of nine points, but with Quinnipiac making twelve out of the
seventeen shots from the free throw, the team was able to secure the win.
“We were a little bit on fumes mentally and physically in the last five minutes. I think it
was not us stepping off the gas pedal but more them getting some juice off of us with
the turnovers,” Moore said.
Despite having four players injured, Quinnipiac did not appear to be bothered.
Azotam said, “One man goes down, another man steps us.”
And that is what they did. Drame made his presence felt as soon as the ball was tipped
off. But it was Azotam who showed off his skills in the second half of the game. He
finished the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds, picking up his 41st career double-
double. Azotam is currently tied with legendary Quinnipiac forward Justin Rutty for the
most double-doubles in a career at Quinnipiac.
Junior guard Zaid Hearst also had a strong game as he tacked on 20 points in the
second half. This was his sixth 20-point game in the last seven games.
For the Peacocks, it was junior forward Marvin Dominique who led his team with 15
points and 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Trevis Wyche had 16 points, and senior
forward Chris Burke had 12.
Quinnipiac advances to 17-8, leaving the team tied at 12-4 in the MAAC conference with
Manhattan College and Canisius College. Quinnipiac will travel to Buffalo to play
Canisius College Thursday at Koessler Athletic Center.
