Speech Delivered At The Press Conference To Announce Activities To
Commemorate One Year In Office Of The Dr. Kayode Fayemi Led
Administration In Ekiti State, Held On Monday October 10, 2011 At The
Exco Chamber Of The Governor’s Office, Ado-Ekiti.

PROTOCOLS/SALUTATIONS

Distinguished colleagues in the journalism profession, I am delighted to have you honour our
invitation to this Press parley aimed primarily at thanking you for the unquantifiable support that
you have extended to us in the last one year, while also using the opportunity to intimate you
with the events lined up to mark the 1st year in office of our administration.

Ahead of anything, let me reiterate that this event is a follow up to the pledge of the Dr. Kayode
Fayemi led government to run a government that is above all transparent and accountable to the
people of Ekiti state. It is for this same reason that we have continued to see you as indispensable
stakeholders in the task of building a state that is above all pragmatic.

You will all recall that we took over the reign of leadership on October 16, 2010 having been
declared the true winner of the governorship election of 2007 and the rerun elections of 2009.

The target we set for ourselves during the campaigns and even at the inauguration before the
mammoth crowd that ushered us to office is very clear to us. We designed our programme,
bearing in mind that with the support and cooperation of the good people of Ekiti State behind
us, we shall not fail.

You will agree with me, though that one year may be short in the life of any administration to
make a lasting impact. But with God and the people of Ekiti on our side, we have been able to
put the state on the path of recovery and transformation; we have kept hope alive.

At the inception of this administration we presented an 8-point Agenda through which we want
the Ekiti people to judge our performance. This agenda which is all encompassing has been
religiously implemented to give the people of the state a new lease of life and to move the state
from the backward situation to the path of steady progress.
Though, most of the actions taken have been in the area of institutional reforms, the feedback we
are getting from our people shows that we are on the right track and that if we continue with
these reforms, we would have established a road map to the greatness of our dear state in distant
future.

The various laws put in place have been geared towards helping the government to realize the
new Ekiti which it has consistently dreamt of. For instance the Urban Renewal Law, Freedom of
Information Law among others were geared towards elevating the standard of living of our
people.

In the area of health, we have made significant impact on the lives of the Ekiti people either
through the Free Health Programme recently launched for children under the age of 5 years,
adults above the age of 65 years pregnant women and the physically challenged, and the Free
Health Mission which has rescued thousands of our people from the shackles of sickness and
diseases. I want to report to you that over 145,000 people have been treated free from diverse
diseases under the Free Health Mission in the last one year. The medical mission is an ongoing
one.

In the area of employment, about 5,000 of our unemployed youths have been taken off the streets
and accommodated in the service of the state government. The programme which is ongoing will
see many more in the years to come given new lease of life and hope of a better future restored to
them.

Our agricultural programme has also received the commendation of farmers through the
provision of farm equipment and inputs to our farmers. Agricultural loans are being given to
farmers to assist them in their productions. Even our people abroad have been so fascinated to
the programme that they are deploying huge resources to participating in the project.

Road construction equally received a boost with the ongoing award of Afao-Ado; Ilawe-Ado and
other 10 major roads in the state. Other road projects inherited from past government including
Ado-Ifaki dual carriage way is now being prosecuted with renewed vigour to ensure early
completion.

You will agree with me that we have touched lives in the area of health, education, social and
infrastructural development as well as in the state economy as we continue to break new grounds
for the development of our state.
It is therefore our desire to pursue the recovery of the values that we used to be known for with
clear determination so that we can jointly build a culture of transparency and accountability for
the future leaders of our dear state.

Our government has decided to mark the historical watershed and that is particularly the other
reason why we have called you as veritable partners so that we can intimate you with the
activities lined up for the week long celebrations, running from today till Sunday, October 16,
2011 .

This Press Conference flags off the programmes, we shall be having a stakeholders’ celebrations

Friday October 14 will mark Day 1 of a 2 day Economic Development Summit at the Adetiloye
Hall, Trade Fair Complex, Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti. The Summit, aimed at brainstorming with
stakeholders in the economic sector of the economy on how best we could tap the resources at
our disposal for the ultimate development and attraction of investors to the state starts by
9:30a.m and is to be followed by the Jumaat Service by 1:00 a.m, at the Central Mosque, Ado-
Ekiti.

By 9:00 a.m on Saturday, we shall be converging at the Adetiloye Hall, Trade Fair Complex,
Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti for the day 2 of the Economic Development Summit.

On Sunday October 16, 2011 which is the last day, there would be a thanksgiving service by
10:00 a.m at the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Ado-Ekiti and by 5:00p.m it would be time for the
State Banquet which is strictly by invitation at Adetiloye Hall, Trade Fair Complex, Iyin Road,
Ado-Ekiti.

Our government has kept hope alive even as we continue to demonstrate our commitment to
executing the development agenda of the Dr. Kayode Fayemi led administration as explicitly
spelt out in the 8 point agenda.

For the avoidance of doubts, the government is also bent on ensuring that it touches lives not
minding the very limited liquid resources at its disposal. The challenge of raising the Internally
Generated Revenue of the state is being pursued with vigour and there is no relenting in the
arduous task of blocking waste for the ultimate good of our people.

Gentlemen of the Press, while thanking you for your partnership and support, we trust that you
would publicise these events adequately. Furthermore, I want to urge you to continue to partner
with the government on this tedious but exciting journey out of the doldrums.

I thank you all for coming and your continual support to this administration.

H.E. MRS. ‘FUNMI OLAYINKA
DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF EKITI STATE.
