Olentzero is a traditional Basque figure that brings gifts to children on Christmas Eve. He is depicted as a charcoal maker who lives alone in the mountains and comes down to visit villages each winter. Originally a pagan solstice celebration, Olentzero was Christianized and now notifies Basque communities of Christ's birth each year, delivering gifts and singing songs with the children. Modern celebrations involve costumes, singing, dancing and exchanging gifts between families and in schools.
