2. Foreshadowing!
When Madame Schachter goes ‘crazy’ and
screams about a fire this is an example of
foreshadowing, because in the
Concentration/Death Camp there were
crematoriums build to burn the bodies of
the Jews.
3. Imagery!
During the course of the book there many
examples of imagery are seen like when he
speaks of the barbed wire that encloses the
camp that is an example of imagery.
4. Symbolism!
The barbed wire around the ghetto is a
symbol of the captivity of the Jews and the
Golden Star they had to wear is a symbol of
their oppression.
5. Similes!
“His mere presence among the deportees
added a touch of unreality to the scene. It
was like a page torn from some story
book….” this is an example of one of the
powerful similes he uses to set a mood of
the story.
6. Personification!
In “night” not only the Nazis have turned
against young Elie but the entire world has
seemed to turn its back (and as we know
the earth dose not have a back) on him as
seen here:
“Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence
which deprived me, for all eternity, of the
desire to live. Never shall I forget those
moments which murdered my God and my
soul and turned my dreams to dust.”
7. Irony!
Going back to the whole Madame
Schachter is insane thing this is an example
of irony because it turns out there was a fire
engulfing everything thing… and the others
on the cart just shrugged it off to insanity.
8. Anaphora!
"Never shall I forget that night, the first night in
camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times
sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I
forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw
transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I
forget those flames that consumed my faith for ever.
Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me
for all eternity of the desire to live. Never shall I forget
those moments that murdered my God and my soul and
turned my dreams to ashes. Never shall I forget those
things, even were I condemned to live as long as God
Himself. Never“
The word “Never” is repeated over and over in this text.
9. Symbolism: part~2!
In the book anything that happens to Elie
that is bed is associated with the night:
~they are told they will be deported at night
~they arrive at the camp and night
~Evacuation of Buna begins at night
~along with many other examples
10. Symbolism: part~3
Fire is used as a symbol of the destructive
power of the Nazis:
~ Fire is used as weapon of mass
destruction
~Fire is used to destroy the bodies of the
Jews in the crematorium
