2. Nick and Frida’s first meeting was serendipitous as
she was supposed to have been with Diego in San
Francisco, but she had traveled to Mexico several
days ahead of him. By the time Diego had come
home, Nick had returned to New York with a letter
from Frida telling him, “Nick, I love you like I would
an angel. You are a lillie of the valley my love. I will
never forget you, never, never. You are my whole life.
I hope you will never forget this, Frida.”
And the beginning of a ten-year affair had begun.
In the summer of 1941, Nick closed a circle when he
captured their last moment of closeness in a
stunning self-portrait with Frida in her studio,
surrounded by her universe. Uncannily, Nick
exposed their affair from beginning to end as objects
play off one another. Frida sits at her easel, which
holds her self-portrait Me and My Parrots. Looking
away from him, with a sad expression she stares at
the camera; Nick standing to the other side of the
easel, turns his infatuated look on her.
Nick, elinde Frida’nın bir mektubuyla New York’a
dönmüştü; mektupta şunlar yazıyordu: “Nick , bir
meleği severcesine seviyorum seni. Sen, vadimde bir
zambaksın, aşkım. Seni hiç unutmayacağım, hiç ama
hiç. Sen benim hayatımsın. Umarım bunu asla
unutmazsın, Frida”.
Ve on yıllık bir aşk ilişkisi böylece başlamış oluyordu.
Nick, 1941 yazında, Frida’yla son yakınlık anlarını,
Frida’nın kendi evreniyle kuşatılmış stüdyosundaki
şaşırtıcı bir otoportreyle yakaladığında bir halkayı
tamamlıyordu.Nick, gizemli bir biçimde, nesneler
arasındaki oyunla, aşk ilişkilerini başlangıcından
sonuna açığa vuruyordu: Frida, otoportresi Ben ve
Papağanlarım’ın bulunduğu şövalesinin başında
oturur. Nick’ten yana bakmaz, gözlerini hüzünlü bir
ifadeyle fotoğraf makinesine dikmiştir; şövalenin
öteki yanında duran Nick, aşk dolu gözlerle Frida’ya
bakar.
