Editor's Notes Nexcare's’ background stems from our hospital heritage. A lot of the products were developed with 3M technology and innovation and originated in hospitals.
3M were the first to market with Micropore which is a very well known first aid paper tape. Another unique product is Tegaderm which was developed with 3M’s knowledge in adhesives and non-woven technology.
Essentially, Nexcare was brought out to give customers hospital quality wound care for the home.
Acrylate adhesive has limited contact and higher adhesion required. Skin is not flat, but has hills and valleys. Traditional tapes require high adhesive strength because they are slow to conform to the natural profile of the skin, only adhering at the highest points. With time the adhesive will flow into the contours of the skin and around hair, resulting in increasing adhesion which results in pain upon removal.
Silicone adhesive have lower surface tension than traditional adhesives, allowing the silicone to conform quickly to the skin’s natural profile and create a secure bond immediately. The ideal adhesive level remains constant throughout wear time, resulting in less pain and trauma on removal.
