People often litter in oceans without considering the impact on marine life. Plastic, bottles, nets and other debris accumulate in oceans and can entangle or be ingested by animals, slowly killing them. The trash also affects climate change. While the ocean provides much of our drinking water, people continue dumping plastic bottles and garbage into it. However, efforts to reduce littering, pick up ocean trash, and properly dispose of waste can help improve water quality over time.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a massive area of marine plastic pollution located between Hawaii and California. It contains over 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic debris, weighing an estimated 80,000 tons. The patch has accumulated due to ocean currents forming a gyre that circulates the trash. Plastic poses threats to wildlife such as seabirds, fish, sea turtles, and marine mammals that can ingest or become entangled in it. Over time, plastic breaks down into smaller pieces but does not fully degrade. Cleanup efforts are ongoing but the patch remains a serious environmental problem.
Police, military, and service animals undergo extensive training to assist humans in various ways. Police and military dogs, for example, are trained in obedience, drug and bomb detection, and search and rescue. They help protect citizens and their handlers. Service animals assist those with disabilities like vision loss or seizures through tasks tailored to individual needs. Many undergo years of training and cost thousands of dollars to care for and prepare to provide their valuable services.
Each year 18,000 trillion tons of litter ends up in the ocean, with most plastic concentrated in five subtropical ocean regions. The document argues that people should reduce, reuse and recycle to prevent garbage from polluting the oceans and harming sea animals, and that new technology can help clean up oil spills.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere, promising self-driving cars, medical breakthroughs, and new ways of working. But how do you separate hype from reality? How can your company apply AI to solve real business problems?
Here’s what AI learnings your business should keep in mind for 2017.
