The earthquake in Nepal in April 2015 caused widespread damage. Over 8,000 people were killed and 18,000 injured. Hundreds of thousands of houses were damaged. Several important cultural heritage sites were also damaged, including three UNESCO World Heritage sites. The earthquake caused an estimated $7 billion in economic losses, equivalent to 35% of Nepal's GDP. While some trekking routes were affected, most popular tourist destinations and infrastructure were intact. The Nepalese government and travel companies encouraged visitors to still travel to Nepal to help with recovery efforts.
