Narrative Structure
My narrative is a closed narrative. This is because my story has a beginning and an end in
the 8 pages, it does not carry on like a TV series such as Family Guy which is now into triple
figure episodes as this does not have an ending and can carry on. Most films and stories are
closed as they have usually been passed down and remembered and by making it end
makes it easier to be remembered. My narrative is also a single strand story which is where
there is a main character and the story is focused around that character. You can also get
multiple strand stories which is where you have several stories happening such as Pulp
Fiction where the story is not set around one character and one story but multiple
characters with multiple stories which often intertwine with each other linking stories
together. My narrative has a liner story which is where the story goes in order and does not
skip between time. As the narrative, I have done is a children’s book, a linear story is more
suitable as it is much easier to follow. An example of a non-linear example is the movie
Inception where the time jumps back and forth making it confusing to follow making that
one of the reasons that the movie is for an older age group. My narrative is anti-realist. This
is because my story contains things which could never happen such as the giant beanstalk
and portals used to teleport. An example of a realist is Fresh Meat which is a TV series about
University and within this series nothing impossible happens or anything which could not
happen in real life but is all possible making it ‘realistic’.
Narrative Components
My narrative starts with an opening. The beginning of my book starts in the main character’s
kitchen where he is talking to his mum. Most stories start by introducing the main character,
especially in children’s books as it makes the story easier to understand. My story does not
contain conflict as I have kept it very child friendly so no violence is involved but there is
slight conflict in that the character needs to plan making tension that there could be
conflict. Most stories use conflict to help drive the story. This is because conflict gives a
character more story and things to do to lengthening out the story. My narrative ends with
resolution. This is because at the end the main character completes what he was set out too
and has a good and happy ending. This often occurs within children’s books as it is good to
make it nice for being such a young age. Not all stories have a resolution like the movie LIFE
where the film goes throughout having problems but also ends on a bad note that you think
is going to end well but is twisted. Sometimes leaving the story on a bad note is good as it
allows the viewer to be interested in what happens next as the ending can be left a mystery
if it is bad. My narrative does not contain an Enigma. An Enigma is a puzzle within the movie
which also intrigues the viewer. This is seen in the series The Killing where you are led to
believe that the murderer could be multiple people making the viewer think and almost
interact with their thoughts. My narrative also does not have climax. Climax is often a point
within the story which is a turning point for the main character where often the main
character is put into a bad situation but mostly comes out the problem beating it which can
create tension. Climax can be seen in most super hero movies where the super hero is often

2. being beaten by the enemy but then the super hero gets a last-minute bit of fate and beats
the bad guy. My narrative does not use manipulation of time and space. This is where time
is condensed or stretched to make it fit a certain length of film. Most movies are around 90
minutes but to be able to fit the whole story they will use post production to make it seem
like possibly years or any amount of time necessary has passed. This is done by removing
anything which is not needed to be seen by the viewer such as skipping between scenes of
travel by removing out the boring parts people don’t want to see can help get the film to the
length they want to. This is done the same with books where you would not mention the
sections of travel.
