2. Mystery, Alaska
Mystery, Alaska is a little known gem
written by David E. Kelley (veteran TV
writer and producer) and directed by Jay
Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents).
It centers on the title town, which is
fictional, and the hockey that unifies its
residents. After a sports writer highlights
the town in a Sports Illustrated article,
the New York Rangers agree to play an
exhibition game against the locals. There
are a ton of smaller plotlines happening
but they manage to weave together
seamlessly and ingrain the town’s heart
in the viewer. If this sounds like a gushy
teen love letter, that’s because it is. This
movie makes me happy, plain and
simple.
