Music Director for the Detroit Athletic Club for 20 years. Owned the Graystone Ballroom. Managed his own orchestra. Went bankrupt in 1935 and lost the Graystone. Couldn’t really play mucis himself. Brought Bix Beiderbecke to Detroit for several years (1925-27). Also managed the Orange Blossoms and the JG Book Cadillac Orchestra.

Don Redman came to Detroit in 1927 to lead McKinney’s Cotton Pickers. He was an arranger for Fletcher Henderson in NYC. Redman’s arrangements for reed instruments were monumental and precedent setting. Played with MCP from 1927-1931. Formed the Don Redman Orchestra in 1931. Benny Carter ran the MCP from 1931-1934.
