  1. Published in Detroit in 1898
  2. Bailey died in 1870 and Finney in 1899. The group included Ben Shook, violin, who led the band after Finney died. W. Jack Johnson, cornet. Fred Stone, who transitioned the group into the Fred Stone Orchestra and the Fred Stone Ragtime Band.

  5. Sailing from Detroit to Sandusky and back. Finney Orchestra.
  6. Published in 1903. Ben Shook led the Detroit Serenaders.
  7. The Peerless Orchestra plays Fred S. Stone's "Ma Ragtime Baby" on Edison Record 700, which was issued in 1899. Fred Stone’s Ragtime Band, a successor to the Thomas Finney Orchestra.
  8. Long standing gig at the Pier Ballroom. Leroy Smith Born in Romeo MI in 1888. Played Violin.

  10. Addison Ballroom, Specht played violin. Specht was born in Pennsylvania, played in Atlantic City, but had a long standing gig in Detroit.

  12. "Cookie and His Ginger Snaps” Cook played with Fred Stone and Ben Shook. His band included Billy Butler, Freddie Keppard, Jimmie Noone and Johnny St. Cyr.
  13. McKinney’s Synco Jazz Band. The band was founded in Springfireld, OH. Jean Goldkette heard them on tour and brought them to Detroit. They played the Arcadia first.
  14. On Woodward. McKinney played there in 1926.
  15. On Woodward between Willis and Canfield. White venue. Goldkette brought the band here, and changed its name to the Cotton Pickers. 1927. Demolished in 1980.
  16. Music Director for the Detroit Athletic Club for 20 years. Owned the Graystone Ballroom. Managed his own orchestra. Went bankrupt in 1935 and lost the Graystone. Couldn’t really play mucis himself. Brought Bix Beiderbecke to Detroit for several years (1925-27). Also managed the Orange Blossoms and the JG Book Cadillac Orchestra.
  17. From Canada. Changed their name to the Casa Loma Orchestra for a stint at that club in Toronto. Name stuck. Played in LA for years. Managed by Goldkette.
  18. Small version of the Cotton Pickers. First recorded in 1928. Don Redman was a clear leader.
  19. Don Redman came to Detroit in 1927 to lead McKinney’s Cotton Pickers. He was an arranger for Fletcher Henderson in NYC. Redman’s arrangements for reed instruments were monumental and precedent setting. Played with MCP from 1927-1931. Formed the Don Redman Orchestra in 1931. Benny Carter ran the MCP from 1931-1934.
  20. Benny Carter on Alto Sax and Trumpet. Smack in 1940. Led the MCP and Chocolate Dandies.
  21. The Valley was located within the Black community on the city's near East Side around the intersection of St. Antoine and Adams. It’s now the Chrysler Freeway I-375 and Lafayette Park. Named Black Bottom by the French because of the fertile top soil. The 606 Horse Shoe Bar.

  26. Matthew Rucker’s Spirits of Swing. Featuring Bill Evans (Yusef Lateef) and Milt Buckner. Started at Miller High School.

  28. Bobby Byrne’s dad was part of Cass Tech’s music dept. Donahue’s step dad ran a Ford plant.

  31. Cliff Bell's is a jazz club in Detroit, Michigan which is located at 2030 Park Ave. It originally opened in 1935, and it is named after John Clifford Bell, an entrepreneur in Detroit in the 1930s
  32. Thad Jones, Hank Jones, and Elvin Jones.
  33. Born in Highland Park. He composed 43 pieces, was the leader on eighteen albums spanning 28 years,[2] and participated in 600 sessions as a sideman.
  34. Baker's Keyboard Lounge located on 20510 Livernois Street in Detroit, Michigan, is the world's oldest operating jazz club, operating since May 1934
