Projection is a method for representing the three-dimensional surface of a globe or globe-like object on a plane. In 1950, French geographer Jacques Bertin developed a system for map projections that allowed for distortion-free representation of small areas and relationships on maps. Bertin's projection system established principles for map design that are still used today.
