Michaelangelo's famous sculpture of David was commissioned by the city of Florence in 1501 as a symbol of strength and civic pride. The 17-foot tall marble statue depicts the biblical hero David and is considered one of the masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture. It now resides in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence.
