Micah Mason played his last three years of college basketball at Duquesne
University after transferring from Drake University. Mason earned Third Team All-Atlantic
10 as a senior. In addition, he finished his career with 1,431 points, including 1,269 at
Duquesne. Mason's point total was the fourth-highest three-year total in school history. He
completed his career as the sixth-best 3-point shooter in NCAA history at .463 (311-671).
His .458 (271-592) 3-point percentage at Duquesne was the best in Atlantic 10 history. Last
week, I had the privilege to conduct an interview with one of Duquesne's best basketball
players in recent history.
Mason had a terrific career with Duquesne; his numbers speak for itself. With that
being said, more goes on in the day-to-day life of a student athlete besides the
achievements and rewards that they accomplish. When I talked to Mason, he elaborated on
his overall experience while attending Duquesne University. Mason stated, "Duquesne was
a great experience for me, I accomplished a lot. I built great friendships and I got everything
out of a college that I wanted to". Its great news when you hear a student athlete enjoyed
their college experience. Part of the reason why Mason enjoyed his time at Duquesne was
because he was playing in his hometown where his friends and family could watch him
play. It is a lot easier to succeed when someone has people around them who care and
support them.
Undoubtedly, building close relationships with teammates was not the only reason
why Micah had a phenomenal college basketball career at Duquesne. Mason said
the relaxed environment helped him prosper as well. Mason states, "There was not much
pressure while I was playing basketball for Duquesne. I was not worried about being taken
out of the game. I had ultimate freedom with every decision that I made on the basketball
court and it helped a lot". Mason was able to play freely and he did not have to look over his
shoulder when he committed a turnover or when he was missed open shots. Due to the
culture head coach Jim Ferry created, Mason was able to blossom in an offense that was
fast paced (Run-N-Gun), quick ball movement and an offense that would spread out the
floor. Mason had the trust of the coaching staff that helped him become a fantastic
basketball player. The calm basketball environment that Mason was a part of could be one
of the main reasons why he had an assist to turnover ration of 2.3-to-1 along with having
40 career games without committing a turnover.
Micah Mason loved his time while attending Duquesne University. He thanks his
coaches, friends, family and the fans who supported him while he was playing for the
Duquesne Dukes. He has a bright basketball future ahead of him where he has a good
chance of playing professional basketball. That might be playing overseas in Europe or
potentially playing in the D-League or the NBA. No matter what Micah accomplishes at the
next level of his basketball career it can be directly related to his time while playing for the
Duquesne Dukes.
