Melitta Bentz invented the coffee filter in the early 1900s after getting tired of drinking coffee with grounds in it. She experimented with using blotting paper from her son's school books in a brass pot with holes to filter the coffee grounds. Her invention eventually led to the production of specialized filter paper and bags for coffee filters.
