Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man named Robert Shurtlieff and joined the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, fighting for over a year before her secret was discovered. She was the first woman to ever serve in the U.S. military. After the war, she received an honorable discharge and a veteran's pension from the U.S. government in recognition of her service.
