(MDS) Programme
Preamble
T
his is a market tailored Programme
accredited by the Commission for
University Education (CUE) offered by The
Management University of Africa. Master of
Arts in Development Studies sets out to understand
and analyse the development processes that are
transforming peoples’ lives around the world.
The focus of the programme is to build capacity for
human resource capital that enhance competences
in the field of development studies. The programme
gives students the opportunity to explore social,
political, environmental and economic changes in
the developing world. The content of the programme
addresses problems that confront the development
environment in Africa and beyond.
The programme targets those who aspire to be high
level managers in public, private, international
organizations as well as Non-governmental
organizations.
Our Approach and Pedagogy
In a cordial environment at Management University of Africa our
pedagogical approach shall include but not be limited to: close interaction
with the Faculty to equip students with case studies; quantitative
methodology; and, analytical tools. Besides, students will participate and
present independent seminar papers necessary for a successful career as
development professionals with a strong development policy orientation.
The programme will also drive interested students into a Doctor of
Philosophy (Ph.D) programme.
The Master of Arts in Development Studies (MDS) offers knowledge in
various thematic fields of Human Rights and International Development;
Peace, Security and Conflict Management; Gender and Community
development; Children and Youth Development; as well as Public Policy
Analysis. To understand, evaluate and propose a curriculum of this
magnitude the University intends to build capacity and equip students to
demonstrate and understand the global challenges and opportunities of
today; acquire the skills to rigorously evaluate theories and development
policies relevant in real world applications. We now recognise that the
impact of global economic,environmental, political and social forces are
universal—and embracing and connecting us all. The programme shall
be offered on full time, evening, weekend and on Open Distance and
e-Learning mode.
Structure of the Programme
The programme shall be taught entirely in English with a strong
international orientation. The programme shall last for two academic years
(four trimesters). In the first three trimesters the University shall offer four
core course together with one elective course unit making a total of five
course units. During the fourth trimester the students shall participate
in field work and complete writing the thesis for presentation in an oral
defense examination in readiness for graduation.
Admission Requirements
A minimum of upper second class honours or its equivalent from a
recognized University, lower second class honours with at least two
(2) years or Pass degree with five years relevant working experience
in Research, Administrative, Management NGO, or public sector as
evidenced by publication of one paper in a peer reviewed journal and
patent documents.
