Ken McCloud is praised for his expertise in herpetology and his work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The author recalls meeting Ken years ago at a herpetology conference and later calling him for advice on permits, which Ken provided knowledgeably and helpfully. Their professional relationship evolved into a close friendship over many discussions on biodiversity loss and other topics. Ken is described as having extensive herpetological knowledge and skills in caring for confiscated reptiles and amphibians. The author directed colleagues to consult Ken, who was always honest, helpful and accurate. The author is concerned Ken's unique skills will be hard to replace after his retirement from the USFWS.
