THE Express & Star has launched
a new app for Android users in
the wake of the success of its apps
for iPad and iPhone.
The app’s page-turning
technology allows users to read
the newspaper as it appears on the
printed page, but in an electronic
format. Editions of the Express &
Star are available within minutes
of publication and include
exclusive video content. Once an
edition is available, it can be
downloaded to read anywhere,
even when offline.
Other benefits include access to
the most recent 30 editions of the
paper, a keyword story search and
the ability to download specific
pages. The Android app, which
costs £4.99 a month or £44.99 a
year, joins the Express & Star app
for iPad and iPhone plus a
desktop edition for PC and
laptop users.
WOODWING has released
version 4.0 of Elvis DAM, its
digital asset management
solution. The new version
features a seamless integration
with Content Station – the
editorial management application
of WoodWing’s multi-channel
publishing solution Enterprise.
WoodWing Software president
Erik Schut said: “The integration
of Elvis DAM and Content
Station allows for a level of
efficiency in publishing
workflows that couldn’t have
been imagined.”
Paper in the bank for Palm Recycling
Newspapers promote pride in Devon
PALM Recycling has won a five year contract
with East Cambridgeshire Council to manage
and service its paper bank scheme, co-ordinating
the collections from more than 20 council ‘bring
bank’ sites.
With a possible two-year contract extension,
Palm Recycling will install galvanised steel
container banks at sites, including supermarket
car parks, schools and community locations.
Palm Recycling operations regional manager
Rachel Chadwick said: “Bring banks remain a
popular form of recycling with the general
public – in fact we are seeing a year-on-year
increase in the number of banks we manage
throughout the UK.
“Palm Recycling has over 6,000 recycling
banks nationwide and East Cambridgeshire
Council will benefit from our 25+ years’
experience in managing bank schemes such as
this one.”
Quality recycled paper, which is paper without
contamination, is important to Palm Recycling,
as it collects this material and transfers it to its
parent company Palm Paper which reprocesses it
into fresh newsprint for use by press rooms up
and down the country.
Palm Paper’s mill in Kings Lynn, Norfolk,
uses more than 500,000 tonnes of newspapers
and magazines each year in its fibre recycling.
Palm Recycling works in partnership with
more than 100 local authorities within the UK,
managing bring bank contracts.
THE Exmouth Journal and Sidmouth Herald in East Devon are
running a campaign aimed at helping to lift gloom and to
celebrate good news. Pride in Exmouth and Pride in Sidmouth
logos are being used within articles and on photographs to
draw readers’ attention to good news.
Devon group editor Phil Griffin said: “There is so much
negativity around these days that we felt we should do our bit
to highlight what is good in our towns.
“We feel there is much to celebrate each and every week –
whether it’s a youngster raising money for charity or an
incredible tale of triumph over adversity.
“So each time a reader sees the ‘Pride’ logo, they will know it
marks an article which will make them glow inside with pride.”
Articles marked with logos in the week of the launch
included ‘Take a paws to help guide dog charity’, ‘Cycle
marathon challenge for plucky 76-year-old Tony’ and ‘Thank
you for returning my purse’.
A NEW chapter has opened for
newspaper publisher NWN Media as
the company is set to remain family
owned and a new generation of
shareholders takes control.
First established in Oswestry in the
mid 1800s when a small printer
published a railway timetable, the
company now publishes a portfolio of
daily and weekly titles along with a
series of award-winning websites. The
group reaches an audience of more
than a million every week.
Now, after a period of
reorganisation, the company has a
changed board of directors and a new
shareholding structure split between
two families.
Production and business
development director Anthony Moss
and operations director Huw Jones
will continue to work in the business
while also sitting as board members
and shareholders.
Chairman of the company Russell
Whitehair has left to pursue other
opportunities, while family member
and vice-chairman, Nonna Woodward
is retiring after 40 years with the
company.
NWN managing director David
Faulkner said the business was in great
shape to exploit new opportunities. He
said: “We are a company that believes
in the traditional values of local media.
We are confident that by providing
titles and websites of quality for our
readers and advertisers, the
communities we serve will also
support us.
“It is a challenging time for the
media but we maintain faith in the
values that have served this company
well over the years and still see a clear
and profitable road ahead.
“The new board and shareholder
structure puts us in a good position to
move forward.”
A shareholder statement said: “It has
been a period of some flux for our
company but we believe we have
emerged from it leaner and in far
better shape to move forward
commercially.
“We have always been family owned
and retaining that status was
something that was very important to
us. We have achieved that and are now
very optimistic about what the future
holds for us and also for our loyal
readers.”
Other members of the board are
editorial director Barrie Jones and
finance director Sheila Watkins.
NWN Media invested in a new state
of the art KBA Commander press
opened by the Prince of Wales in 2008
and says that, since then, its contract
print business has gone from strength
to strength. As well as the company’s
own titles, a range of contracted work
is now printed at the NWN print
centre in Deeside including The Bolton
News, The Lancashire Evening Telegraph,
The Stoke Sentinel and The Daily Mail.
The company plans to extend the
concept of contract print work to its
pre-press operation.
Director Anthony Moss said:
“Initially we looked at what was
available out there, perhaps with a
view to outsourcing some of our own
increasing pre-press work volumes.
However, what we discovered was a
real opportunity in the marketplace.
“We believe NWN can offer
external customers a market-leading
service covering all their pre-press
needs at a cost that represents real
value for money.
“We are currently discussing this
service with several interested
customers and would hope to grow
this option for the industry when
several large companies are looking to
shed elements of this substantial
internal cost.
“We can do it well, we can do it to
deadline and we’re in the North West
– not India.”
