Matariki is the Maori new year that is celebrated for 3 days when the Pleiades star cluster rises in mid-winter. It marks the start of a new year and is a time to celebrate Maori culture and traditions as well as honor the land. The rising of the stars known as Matariki, or puanga, inspires legends about the goddesses Mata Ariki and their importance to the Maori people and new beginnings.
