Masks are used around the world for various ceremonies and traditions. In Africa, masks are used for village ceremonies, weddings, funerals, and coming of age rituals and represent spirits to ask for blessings and protection. Native Americans used ceramic masks for war, while masks in places like Bolivia, Costa Rica, and Peru depict animals and spirits. Masks in places like Polynesia, China, and India are used for communicating with gods, warding off evil, and representing religious figures to cure diseases. In the U.S., masks are commonly used for Halloween, Mardi Gras, performances, and parades to pretend to be different characters and tell stories.

Masks have been used for at least 20,000 years for various purposes across civilizations. They often represent forces of nature or are used in rituals and ceremonies related to fertility, seasons, and life cycles. Many cultures believe that masks contain supernatural power and that the spirit of the mask performs rather than the person wearing it. One important aspect of masks is their ability to transform identity and allow the wearer to take on different roles or realities.

Different cultures used masks for ceremonies, rituals, theater, and celebrations. Today, masks are still used in performances and celebrations like Mardi Gras where colorful masks are worn during parades and balls to commemorate the Christian tradition before Lent.

Central and South American masks have a long history dating back to 3000 BC where they were used in religious ceremonies. Masks often featured human and animal features blended together and were used in rituals associated with rain and fertility. The Catholic church later banned jaguar images and costumes due to their association with native religions, though jaguar representations still feature prominently in modern celebrations in the region.
