• They were under the instruction of three groups;
“the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and
the elders.”
• They were well armed; perhaps expecting
trouble
• Led by Judas the betrayer
• Motivated by sin
• Look to Jesus in the darkness

3. In the Chaos the Light shines

The disciples have had very little sleep
The quiet of the garden was lost as a crowd
appeared
• It must have been confusing
• Jesus remained at peace

• It was Peter with the sword; “Then Simon Peter,
who had a sword, drew it and struck the high
priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The
servant’s name was Malchus)” (John 18:10)
• It was Jesus who cleaned up the mess; “But Jesus
answered, “No more of this!” And he touched
the man’s ear and healed him.” (Luke 22:51)
• Peter could have been arrested
• There should have been four crosses
