Marcos was the president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He imposed martial law from 1972 to 1981, during which time thousands of his political opponents were imprisoned or killed. Large-scale protests and a peaceful "People Power" revolution in 1986 saw Marcos deposed and forced into exile in Hawaii, where he later died.
