St. Isaac's Cathedral contains fine examples of malachite and lapis lazuli in its architecture and decorations. The cathedral features six malachite columns that are green in color alongside two columns made of lapis lazuli, a deep blue semi-precious stone. Some of the largest pieces of both malachite and lapis lazuli can be found on display at the Hermitage Palace and St. Isaac's Cathedral.

precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense
color.
Lapis lazuli was being mined in the northeast Afghanistan as early
as the 7th millennium BC It was used for the eyebrows on the funeral
mask of King Tutankhamun (1341–1323 BC)
