Magento will stop providing free official updates for Magento 1 18 months after announcing the end of updates. This means stores will remain secure for the next 18 months until Magento's final announcement. Purchasing a 3-year extended support contract provides an additional 3 years of security updates and the ability to switch to Magento 2 during that period.
