In the battle at Ncome or Blood River, about 3000 Zulu
warriors died. The deeply religious Boers ascribed the
military victory not to their superior armament and tactics,
but saw it as a miracle and sign from God. They had made
a vow asking for God’s protection from the Zulus and had
promised to build a church in God’s honour.
Coming out victorious affirmed their belief that the
predominance of the whites over the blacks is the will of God.
The colossal monument from bronze-covered iron- in the still
plains of the Ncome valley is a very impressive, almost
spooky monument.
The monuments allow one to relive the bloodshed battle in
tranquility of the present time, away from the actual time of
confrontation that was 16 December 1838. On December 16
each year the “Geloftedag” (“Day of the Vow”) was celebrated
by Afrikaners. However, in the new South Africa, it is the
national holiday “Day of Reconcilliation”.
Encome is the place where Prophet Radebe of the Revelation
Church of God was called upon and received instructions from
God. It is here, where he made a covenant with God.
Encome, therefore, became the Revelation Church of God’s
spiritual home, heritage. Encome tells the story about the past,
present while imagining the future. Visiting the place provides
for a memorable and enjoyable experience.
On 16 December 2014 President Jacob Zuma visited the
historical Ncome, the area site of the historical battle of Blood
River between the Zulus and the Voortrekkers on 16 December
in 1838.
Zuma said reconciliation is possible if everyone makes an effort
to achieve it. Zuma unveiled the Reconciliation Bridge linking
the Ncome Museum and the Blood River Monument where the
two groups have commemorated the battle on opposite sides of
the river for years.

demise; however, it is now the
