Machu Picchu is an Inca citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. It is located above the Urubamba Valley, approximately 50 miles northwest of Cusco. The complex was built in the 15th century and was abandoned just over 100 years later at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire.
