3. History
• Originally known as “West Ridge”.
• Annexed into the city of Chicago in 1893.
• Area began to substantially grow after World War 1 due to a
housing boom.
• After 1960 demographic profile shifted with an increase of Jews,
Eastern Europeans, and Asians.
• First Indian and Pakistani populations came into the area in 1965.

4. Demographics
• Known as “Little India” and even “Little Pakistan” but very
diverse.*
• 2010 Census racial make-up was 29.3% white, 28.6% Asian, 24.7%
Hispanic, and 13.8% black.*
• Chicago ranks 5th out of 10 in cities with the most Asian
residents.**
• The majority reside in the Devon neighborhood.
• Population approximately 27,000 *
• 8.8% decline in population from 2000 (~29,400)

9. Activities and Landmarks
• While exploring Devon, we witnessed many activities and
landmarks unique to its culture.
• Clothing Boutique
• Ate at Sabri Nihari (Pakistani Restaurant)
• Went to bookstore called “Muslim Books and Things"
11. Group Reflection
• This experience was enlightening because we were not aware that
such a diverse and culturally-rich neighborhood existed in Chicago.
The areas we grew up in were composed of mostly one race with
very little diversity. Collectively, we found it very refreshing to
see all these people of different races and ethnicities living in the
same area. We were also very intrigued by the rich Indian culture
in Devon. We’ve been fascinated by Indian traditions, culture,
and art; as we travelled to the far west side of Devon, we felt like
we were in India. We can see why this area has the nickname
“Little India”. We’ll definitely consider visiting this area again to
enjoy the food and scenery.
