films of his then-wife, the director Lois Weber at Universal. “X” was the son of
wealthy parents and graduated from Oxford University. After brief stage
experience, he started in films in 1911 as a leading man with Gaumont in New
Jersey. Immensely prolific, he was at the peak of his career in the mid-1910's. He
stopped directing in the 1920's and was eventually relegated to small part
character roles and extra work by the 1930's

Wives were his some of the best movies.

Oscar-nominated for his supporting role in Olivier's 1965
film of Othello and got his first leading role on television in
1971 as Casanova.
“X” appeared in two Sherlock Holmes films as Inspector
Lestrade, solving the Jack the Ripper murders (A Study in
Terror, 1965, and Murder by Decree, 1979).
“X” appeared on American television in A Christmas
Carol (1984) playing Marley's Ghost opposite George C.

bigot Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do Part (1965)
“X” suffered a stroke in August 2004 and was back on stage a week
later performing in Arthur Miller's "The Price", a two-hour one-man
show.
“X” and Richard Burton were Royal Air Force cadets together at
Oxford in 1944, where they knew one another and became friends.
From 1944-1947, when both were demobilized, they were stationed
together at times in Canada and back in England. Later, they appeared
together in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965).

"actually thinking them", said English playwright Charles Bennett, who met X
in 1927.
According to Time magazine of 21 April 1958, as an addendum to its cover
story on Alec Guinness, in 1957 “X” turned down a Hollywood offer of
$250,000 for one motion picture. Instead of making the movie and
pocketing the cash (worth approximately $1.7 million in 2005 terms), “X”
preferred to take on the role of Archie Rice in John Osborne’s The
Entertainer (1960) (a role written specifically for him) at the princely sum of
£45 per week.
“X” was wary of the Method acting that became so popular in the 50’s.
When he played in Marathon Man with Method actor Dustin Hoffman, “X”
