_________
Can you still remember these
conflicts in a story?
__________________________
1. Internal Conflict – within the character
a. Man vs. Self – a conflict within
the character’s own mind/heart.
He/she may struggle to make the
right decision, with how to feel
about a person or situation, with
fear, with trying to find a true
identity.
Example:
Macy longs to give up,
but is trying to persevere
until her project is
complete.
2. External Conflict
– between a character and someone/something in the
outside world.
a. Man vs. Man
– A person is in conflict with another
person. This often means these two
people have different goals or different
methods. A common example is a hero
in conflict with a villain. But it could also
be best friends in an argument, or a
struggle between a mentor and student.
Example:
Christine gets in an
argument
with her sister.
b. Man vs. Nature
– A person is in conflict with
nature. This is a struggle that
comes from the setting that the
character has to deal with. It could
be surviving in the wilderness after
a plane crash, dealing with illness,
an earthquake, starvation, or a
bear
Example:
Audrie has to figure
out how to cross a
desert without getting
dehydrated.
c. Man vs. Society
– A person is in conflict with a
collective group. It may be a
club, school, city, or
government. It may be a
conflict with a culture, a
tradition, or an established
law.
Example:
Brian is trying to change
the dress code at his
school.
d. Man vs. Supernatural
– A person is in conflict
with something
otherworldly. This may be
magic, a ghost, a vampire,
or a portal.
Example:
Mack must fight off a zombie
that has been brought to life
through magic.
e. Man vs. Technology
– A person is in conflict with
technology. He or she may
be in a struggle with AI, a
robot, a computer virus, or
social media, for example
Example:
A woman tries to
reprogram a robot that
wants to destroy
humankind.

The resolution of the story
occurs when conflicts are
ultimately resolved and the
problems are solved in one
way or another.
Resolution
Stories have a plot, and a plot has five main parts:
introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and
resolution. Resolution is sometimes referred to by the
French term denouement, which means "to untie."
It is important to note that not all resolutions
are positive or happy. Sometimes the
conflict is resolved in a way that is painful for
characters, but ultimately, the conflict is
resolved.
Examples
of
Conflict Resolution
1. Two friends fight
over a boy, but in the
end, they realize that
friendship is more
important, and the
boy ultimately moves
away from the town
anyway.
2. A young lady is sick
with cancer, and while
she fights the disease,
goes through many
treatments, and
changes others with her
positive attitude and
great outlook on life,
she ultimately passes
away from the disease.
Examples from Literature
and Film:
1. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet
are dead, and their families end their
feud as they realize that their hatred has
led to the deaths of their children.
2. When the final book of the Harry Potter
series comes to an end, Voldemort has
been defeated through Harry's ultimate
sacrifice, and although there has been
much loss of life, Voldemort is ultimately
defeated.
3. In the Biblical story of Noah and the Flood, the
flood waters recede after a period of time, and
Noah, his family, and all of the animals are able to
exit the ark. The rainbow becomes a symbol that
God will not use a flood to destroy the Earth again.
