More than 400 years ago, the horse was an integral part of Native Americans’ daily lives and aided in a tribe’s survival. These creatures were imperative for a successful hunt but were also crucial for battle victories. The importance of this harmonious relationship has been handed down from generation to generation through oral history and, today, has developed into the most exciting and explosive competition between the Indian Nations of the Northern Plains – Indian Relay! Horse Nations intensely compete with each other throughout the summer months to earn their place at the All Nations Indian Relay Championships.

BIO
I was born in Sioux City, IA and was raised in South Sioux City, NE. While growing up,
I developed a love for fishing after my dad put a rod and reel in my hand at the age of
5.
LeechLake in Minnesota became much the stage where my childhood dreams were
born. I knew that fishing would be a big part of my life from days spenton that well-
known fishery - but it would have been impossibleat that young age to recognize how
critically impactful the sportwould ultimately be to the rest of my life.
After graduating high school,I immediately enlisted into the Army Infantry Branch and
was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia in June of 1997 forbasic infantry training.
Upon completing basic training, I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas as a memberof
1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, where I served as a Bradley Fighting
Vehicle Driver, Turret Gunner, Rifleman, and M60 gunner.
In March of 1999 I was assigned to South Korea with 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry, 1st
Infantry Division where he served as a Team Leaderin an Infantry Platoon. After
completing my tour of Korea in March of 2000,he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th
Regiment, and 1st Cavalry Division. There he served as a Team Leader,Gunner,
Squad Leader, and Section Leader.
While with 1st Cav, I served two tours in Kuwait and was eventually deployed as part
of Operation Iraqi Freedom. From 2004 to 2005,I was stationed Baghdad, Iraq. I later
redeployed to Balad, Iraq between 2006 and 2007.
This second tour came to an abrupt end for me in June of 2007 when the Bradley

Fighting Vehicle I was commanding was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device
(IED), commonlyreferred to as a roadside bomb.
Despite sustaining life-threatening injuries from the blast, I somehowsurvived the
attack. The explosionclaimed my right eye, caused a traumatic brain injury, shattered
my right arm, wrist, and hand, took half my thumb, and sufferedsevere nerve damage
throughout my right arm.
Nonetheless, after countless surgeries and two years of intense physical rehab, along
with endless supportfrom my wife Kelly, I have regained some of the function that he
originally lost.
It was during my rehabilitation, in January of 2008,that I was introduced to the Army
Bass Anglers (ABA). From that meeting,I found a way to combine my abiding love for
fishing with a deep desire to supportmy fellow wounded soldiers.
As part of the ABA fishing team, I helped buoy the spirits of soldiers who were being
cared for in the same hospitals I was, while raising awareness of the plight that soldiers
faced when they returned home with life-changing wounds.
In Novemberof 2008, my life changed yet again as me and Kelly celebrated the birth
of my first child, a 9-pound baby boy.
In Septemberof 2009,I was medically retired from the United States Army. This was a
bittersweettime for me. I was leaving the service and soldiers that I loved, but it
presented the opportunity to pursue my passion for fishing on a full-time basis.
I continued to fish with ABA until early 2011,when I decidedto retired from the team as
a necessarystep to commit him entirely to attaining my lifelong dream of fishing the
BassmasterElite Series tournament trail. I did not, however, forgethis commitmentto
his wounded brethren, and so partnered with Carry The Load and serve as an
ambassadorfor the organization.
