Life Long Memories at Gettysburg - Steven Pacholyk
1. Life Long Memories at Gettysburg
Life Long Memories at Gettysburg March 13, 2019.
Some of my most fond memories of my father; John Pacholyk, is his love of sycamore trees. On
road trips or walks, he would always point out their majestic size, contrasted bark and
contorted disposition that makes them visually spectacular.
My life long love of the work of the Wyeth Family combined with my long affair with Gettysburg
makes this a perfect specimen of art for me. On a mission to paint a portrait of General Dwight
D. Eisenhower at his Gettysburg retreat in 1959. Mr. Wyeth was there to capture a portrait of
the president for a cover of Time magazine (September 1959). During a break, Andrew Wyeth
took a walk through the south pasture and came across this wonderful sycamore tree
andcaptured it in watercolor on paper (sycamore trees appear in a number of Wyeth works).
2. He purposely diminishes the presidential retreat in the distance to show the simplicity of the
property compared to the owner’s worldwide reputation. He could hear the flags flapping as
he painted and captured them in the distance, showing the president was “at home”, hence its
title.
This post is dedicated to my Dad, his eternal memory and to those who capture and appreciate
beautiful things in everyday commonalities like a simple sycamore tree.

3. Steven Pacholyk, Connecticut businessman and historian shares his love of Gettysburg
to thousands of subscribers.
MADISON, CT, USA, March 10, 2020 -- Steven Pacholyk has been associated with Gettysburg
since a very young age when it started as a family trip at age six and has grown into a lifelong
love of this national historic place. Mr. Pacholyk went on to become the youngest living
Licensed Battlefield Guide in Gettysburg’s history and the second youngest to pass the Guide's
exam at just 16 years of age. While he has gone on to have a very successful career in business
and as an entrepreneur, Gettysburg and The American Civil War remains close to his heart.
Steven deepened his commitment to his passion by joining the Board of Directors at The
National Civil War Museum (NationalCivilWarMuseum.org) and a long time contributor and
museum founder of The Gettysburg Foundation (GettysburgFoundation.org).
“My many trips and vivid memories of this special place needed to be captured. Over the years
I have met thousands of like minded Gettysburg enthusiasts who also have vast memories of
Gettysburg. I knew I was on to something” Pacholyk stated. “It started as a personal blog of my
numerous recollections of trips over 40 some years and that attracted thousands very quickly”
says Pacholyk.
“It’s been rewarding to have members share very personal stories that show their own love and
dedication to this American landmark battle of the Civil War” Steven Pacholyk states.
The Battle of Gettysburg took place in south-central Pennsylvania during the first three days of
July 1863. This battle is considered by many to be a turning point of the Civil War. In just three
days, the combined forces, led by Union General George G. Meade and Confederate General
Robert E. Lee, suffered nearly 51,000 casualties. Nearly a third of the forces involved, became
causalities in the epic three day battle. For Robert E. Lee, it stopped his mid war invasion of the
northern states and put him on the defensive for the rest of the war. The American Civil War
took place from April 1861 until Robert E. Lee surrendered his forces to General US Grant in
April of 1865, officially ending the American Civil War.
