Huntley Area Public Library District voters appeared to be against a tax increase Tuesday to expand
the Ruth Road library.
With unofficial results Tuesday evening from all 28 precincts, 60 percent (8,353 of 14,024 voters) in
both McHenry and Kane counties voted against the increase, and 33 percent (5,671 voters) supported it.
Early voting results were not included in those tabulations, and it is unknown at this time how many
votes are in that tally.
The library, which serves portions of Lake in the Hills and Algonquin, asked voters for a tax increase
to pay for a bond to expand its facility by 3,300 square feet and then operating costs after the expansion.
A homeowner with a home market value of $250,000 would have expected to pay $60 a year more in
taxes, which could be less depending on exemptions, said Library Director Virginia Maravilla.
Maravilla said that the referendum results are better than the previous referendum three and a half
years ago, and the proposed building then was twice the size as the current request. She added that she'll
still wait for the final results that will include early voters.
At the Joy Community Church polling site, Dennis Hill of Lake in the Hills said Tuesday that he
opposed the referendum because taxes are "high enough."
Tiffany Rodriguez of Huntley, a mother of three, said that she voted for the referendum because "the
community is growing."
Residents are using the library more, and last year's survey showed them asking for more books,
quiet space, electronic media like videos and conference rooms for programs, Maravilla said.
