12. Japanese counting
The Abbaccus was invented in China and
brought to Japan in the 15th century. Today
Japanese still say numbers the way they would
be counted on an abbacus.
Example, 54 is broken down into two parts,
5 in the 10s column
4 in the 1s column
54 = 5 10 4 1
13. 5 in the 10s column
4 in the 1s column
54 = 5 10 4 1
In Japanese we don’t say one for the 1s
column. But we do say 5 10 4 which
means 54. ご じゅう よん
Ex. 1 in the 10s column
3 in the 1s column
13 = 10 3
じゅう さん is thirteen
