Dear Judges,
Hello my name is Jason Murphy. I chose to do my senior project on animal assisted
therapy. The reason I decided on AAT as my senior project was based on several reasons, some
of those being my love of animals and the ability it offers families of the disabled or mentally
impaired as well as the person themselves. AAT also interested me because as a child I was
diagnosed with ADHD, aggressive behavior disorder, and an impulsivity disorder. As I got older,
being around animals (ie, horses, dogs) I felt calmer and more like myself.
In doing this project, I learned that something I thought was a relatively easy thing to do is
actually a lot of work. Any animal that will be used in therapy needs to be properly trained. Each
animal's distinct personality needs to be properly matched with a persons specific disability. I also
learned that a lot of time and work are put into every animal that is used in AAT to insure
everyones safety and that they are getting the help they need. By doing this graduation project, I
not only learned how animal assisted therapy works but how well it helps make a difference in a
disabled childs life.
One of the easiest things I found in doing this graduation project, is that there are so many
ways to help people with disabilities and the joys it brings to them and their family. Although,
learning that there are people who do not believe in this type type of therapy and the good it
does, was a little difficult to for me to comprehend. In learning these things and doing this
research it has made me begin to really think about my future and I am looking into becoming a
part of the AAT program or similar programs.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my senior project presentation.
Sincerely,
Jason Murphy
