Reference for Mr Simone Picone
I write to you in support of Mr Simone Picone’s application. I was Mr Picone’s Masters
thesis supervisor when he completed a masters degree in the Department of Sociology at
the University of Cape Town last year. He was also a member of the contemporary social
theory masters course I taught and so I came to know him fairly well as a researcher,
scholar and student and thus feel qualified to write in support of his application to pursue
his studies in migration.
The thesis Mr Picone submitted for the Masters degree reported on his empirical study of
the difficulties encountered by refugees and migrants in accessing public health facilities
in Cape Town, South Africa and his recommendations for improving such access. This
work which was well received by the examiners clearly demonstrated Mr Picone’s deep
concerned for the plight of refugees and migrants and his research and scholastic
knowledge and abilities. I have no doubt that he will build on the experience gained in
this research and produce excellent work in your programme. His performance and
results in the theory course also indicate that he has a good analytic mind and is able to
use theory in a sophisticated way to make sense of social issues.
Yours sincerely
Prof Ken Jubber
